Palma de Mallorca, January 2024. Mallorca’s upward development of the luxury segment of its tourism sector continues with a total of 65 five-star hotels (source: Mallorca Hotel Federation). This year that total will rise with major investment from some of the world’s most prestigious hotel brands including Four Seasons and Mandarin Oriental. The Four Seasons Resort at Formentor is scheduled to open this summer with the anticipated opening of the Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra Resort later this year. Herewith the latest round-up:
The Hotel Valldemossa – opening February 29th
This hotel was acquired by the IT Unique Spaces Group (with five-star boutique hotels in Palma and Pollensa) and has undergone a complete refurbishment. The building, which dates to the 19th century, was originally part of the Royal Charterhouse Palace of Valldemossa and has a privileged position offering panoramic views across the town and the Sierra Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The new Hotel Valldemossa will feature 12 individual suites, all with stunning views, a “Tokio Lima” restaurant (IT Unique Spaces already operate this restaurant concept in the Group’s Can Alomar Boutique Hotel in the centre of Palma). A new facility will be the hotel’s “Sanctuary” which is described as a “healing space” featuring an integrative “Valldemossa Longevity” programme inspired by traditional Chinese medicine and western techniques with a range of treatments based on the Piroche method.
An open-air gym completes the “wellness” area where yoga classes and personal training sessions will be held. A range of exclusive treatments will also be available. The hotel is surrounded by orchards and a market garden has been created to provide ecological home-grown produce for the restaurant. Prices start from 330€ per night based on two people sharing.
Juz de Yartan Arthotel, spring opening
Located in the medieval hillside town of Artá, this will be the second hotel for Yartan in the town and is the refurbishment of an existing building in Artá’s historic quarter. Retaining the original character of the building, the four-star hotel features light and airy rooms with high ceilings, an indoor lounge area with bar, an inner courtyard, a spa, a bodega, plus a rooftop area with outdoor pool offering views across the Sierra de Levante. Hotel Ca Sa Pagesa, Santa Margalida, spring opening
This will be the first hotel to open in Santa Margalida, located in the northeast area of the island close to Can Picafort, and is a refurbishment of an existing building which was originally used for agricultural production of grapes and/or olive oil. The refurbishment and design concept are focused on Mallorquin rural traditions and culture.
The hotel Ca Sa Pagesa will feature 18 rooms, some with private terraces or direct access to the outdoor pool. Breakfast can be served in the interior courtyard area with outdoor pool. Guests will be able to check-in and out independently using “intelligent” key technology.
Son Sabater by Zafiro, Sa Pobla, spring opening
The Zafiro Group will open a new four- star agroturismo hotel in Sa Pobla in the centre of the island close to Pollensa and approximately 30 minutes’ drive from Palma’s International Airport. The building which dates to the 16th century, has been carefully restored to maintain the original character and details of this authentic farmhouse estate using local materials where possible. Son Sabater is surrounded by 20 hectares of land and forest and located at the foot of the Sierra Tramuntana offering views across the mountains and countryside.
The hotel, which is scheduled to open this spring, will feature 15 rooms comprising suites and private villas (with a private terrace and garden). Other features include an exterior swimming pool, a wellness area/spa with an indoor pool, sauna, and treatment room, and an a la carte restaurant with a Mallorquin menu focused on traditional island dishes and Mediterranean cuisine.
The BH Mallorca Magaluf Resort – scheduled opening May 2024
Owners of the resort, the Fergus Hotel Group, has invested 20 million euros in the redevelopment and repositioning to create three individual hotels with the emphasis on family tourism and a more upmarket tourism offer:
The Fergus Club Mallorca Waterpark will the resort’s four-star hotel featuring 656 rooms with various swimming pools including the largest children’s outdoor pool and they claim it will be the largest aquatic park in the Balearics within a hotel resort. The hotel will also feature a Magnus Premium area with outdoor pool, restaurant, and extra facilities in the rooms.
The Group’s Tent branded hotels offer streamlined services with automated check-in, a dedicated App for guests to access services, WIFI etc., and an unlimited breakfast/brunch service available until 13.30 daily.
The Tent Calvia Beach hotel will feature 280 rooms offering a bed and breakfast concept and is located within a few metres from the beach.
The Tent Mojito Suites will be the third hotel with 120 rooms, located close to the beach, the intention is to keep this hotel open all year round.
The Four Seasons Resort at Formentor, Mallorca
It is regarded as the most important hotel opening of the year for Mallorca and is scheduled to open its doors this summer. The island’s iconic Hotel Formentor was the island’s first luxury hotel originally built in 1929 and favoured by Hollywood stars and statesmen. It will be transformed into the new Four Seasons Resort Mallorca – located on the spectacular coastal peninsula on the far northern tip of the island, and approximately an hour’s drive from Palma’s International Airport.
The resort will feature 108 rooms and suites and offer seven gastronomic experiences including three beach restaurants, a vineyard, two pools, a garden spa with outdoor yoga space, tennis court, children’s park, and indoor and outdoor event spaces.
The focus of the design by architect Estudio Lamela with interior designers Gilles & Boissier is to respect and protect the natural surroundings through various environmental initiatives, such as the restoration of native vegetation and planting, reduced water consumption, rainwater harvesting and the use of grey water for landscape irrigation, heat recovery systems, solar power through use of solar panels, and food waste management systems.
Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra Mallorca (Calvia)
The scheduled opening is anticipated for the second half 2024. However, this is not confirmed. When complete, the hotel will be Mandarin’s first resort hotel in Europe and third Mandarin Oriental in Spain. The top location with direct access to the sea, provides access to two beaches. When complete, the hotel will feature 137 rooms, suites and private bungalows, a range of restaurants, three pools (including one children’s pool), a spa, and a covered/indoor pool.
COMING IN 2025…
The island’s first Aethos Palmira Hotel will open in 2025 in Mallorca’s Paguera resort (southwest coast). It is located on the site of an old hotel with direct access to the beach and sea, and will open as a five-star hotel featuring 62 rooms.
