Vintage Travel Posters of Original Artworks of Palma Cathedral & Bellver Castle

Available online & delivered to your door!

Stunning new images, from original watercolours of Palma Cathedral and Bellver Castle painted by Austrian artist Erwin Hubert in the 1930’s, have been released from the Fomento del Turismo de Mallorca’s historic archives.  The images have been skillfully remastered and brought back to life as vintage travel posters by leading travel art specialists Stick No Bills® and are the latest additions to the new Mallorca Vintage® collection.

ORIGINAL PALMA IMAGES DATING BACK TO THE 1930’S

The new additions to the collection were used in the Fomento’s earliest tourism campaigns dating back to the 1930’s to promote the most iconic sites in Palma: La Seu (Palma’s stunning Gothic Cathedral planed by King Jaime 1st in 1229), Hubert painted the view from across the water looking back at the Cathedral at a time when boats docked right up to the Cathedral’s old town walls. The original watercolours, which are owned by the Fomento, have faded and Stick No Bills® has successfully remastered the images to achieve the colourful detail.

The second image is of the Bellver Castle built for King Jaime II in 1300-1311 on top of a hill overlooking the city. This Gothic castle has a distinctive circular design around a central courtyard that was the inspiration for Hubert’s watercolour which depicts a spring scene of almond blossom leading up to the Castle.

Mallorca was Hubert’s adopted home and through his paintings he served as a great ambassador for the island. His delightful watercolours painted in the 1930’s depict idyllic natural landscapes of the island and were acquired by the Fomento del Turismo de Mallorca to be used for posters, postcards, and brochures for promotion throughout Europe.

THE MALLORCA VINTAGE® COLLECTION

The inaugural nine images (available both as open and limited editions) showcase six of the Fomento de Turismo de Mallorca s most iconic posters, with three language variations – English, French and German – of one of its most successful campaigns entitled “Luna del Miel” (Honeymoon in Majorca).  The other images are of Playa de Formentor, Cap Deià, the Caves of Drach, a 50’s design entitled “Majorca for year round sunshine” depicting a girl writing Majorca in the sand and a 1950’s ink drawing of a Map of Majorca.

The Fomento del Turismo de Mallorca was established in 1905 and is probably the world’s longest established tourist board.  Since its existence it has created campaigns to promote the island dating back to the 1930’s, and its extensive archive of original artworks are testimony to Mallorca’s rich tourism history and its pioneering role at the advent of popular tourism in Europe in the 20th Century.
